In this section, Paul Rodriguez describes Technical Analysis, and explains in general terms how it is applied.
My definition of Technical Analysis is the prediction of the future direction of a financial instrument using only its price history. From that point onwards this subject can be as easy or as complicated as you desire. However, learning a complicated technique will not assure better results. Trading is, after all, a relatively simple pursuit that is deceptively difficult to execute profitably. Do not be put off by believing that you need to be a rocket scientist to understand technical analysis. The point of this subject is to provide a tool that allows you to extract a profit from the financial markets in an effective, accurate and reliable manner. To minimise risk and maximise profits. That is the single aim of technical analysis and the derived trading techniques.
There are millions of traders out there. What's your edge over them? To make money means you have to effectively out-think the rest of the market. If your main information source consists of a stock tips from a friend or frantic headlines in the media, in the long run you will find trading very challenging. My experience has taught me where to look and more importantly where not to look for key information.
To consistently make money is a combination of being a good analyst, trader, patience, impartiality, discipline, independence, and courage all in varying degrees. Of key importance is experience and using techncial analysis, all market conditions can be anticipated. Markets go downwards as well as up. Something a professional trader takes for granted as a money making opportunity.
There are many different styles of trading and generally, people who are serious about learning will find a part that works for them. I have as much time to teach people as they need-if they are willing to learn. I know the greatest challenge comes from understanding what really works in trading and having the confidence to apply it so that it is second nature.
